Tuesday, November 18, 2008 Taking the Initiative
My department has a cleaner who clears our rubbish, cleans the toilet, waters the plants and even tidies up the senior management's office sometimes. He does it daily and is always very hardworking in his duties. One thing we admire about him is that he makes effort to take the initiative and to go the extra mile, being observant and thoughtful at the same time.
You know how most of us will chuck a few pairs of shoes under our tables. These shoes are for occasions like covered shoes for formal events, slippers or flats to walk around the office or safety boots walking on construction sites and even exercise shoes for those after work runs or lunch time gyms. My boss has like 10 pairs of high heels shoes, opened and closed toe ones in different colours in her room. Well, this cleaner of ours, took the initiative to build shoe racks out of cardboard boxes for us. My boss has a double storey rack to house her 10 pairs of shoes. The thing is, he not only build sturdy shoe racks, he even decorates them! Mine, and I'm amazed coz he notices that my favourite colour is pink and as is the whole of my cubicle, is in pink Hello Kitty paper. How impressive! And he will place our shoes neatly on the racks when we are not in the cubicles. Such that when we come back, we are in for a pleasant surprise. :) Left - Flats for daily "runs" in the office, running to the photocopying machine, running to the printer to collect printouts, running to the toilet etc..cant be wearing heels all the time, not good for the legs. Middle - Slippers for my trips to the waterways or for cycling around Sentosa. Right - Exercise shoes. As you can see I dont have extra heels under my table unlike my boss. My colleague also have the same habit as her. They can come to work in like A pair of shoes, go for meeting in B pair of shoes then go home in C pair of shoes. Extraordinary! Hahaa...for me, I like all my shoes right where it should be - at home. So that it will eliminate a time when I want to wear a particular pair of shoes and it is in office.
